Just as without knowing the alphabet it is impossible to know the language, so, without fully understanding the words used in the subject of Maths, we cannot expect the learner to master the subject.

During the process of learning it is important to emphasise an understanding of the concepts of words. Words like “house”, “apple” are understood by the student. There is no need to memorise them. I found The Maths Dictionary by Fareeda Abbasi an amazing learning resource. It proved to be very handy for me as a teacher.
