English Grammar Dictionary

Confusion can occur while learning a language that is different to your mother tongue. The structure of the sentence can be different in another language. Also, words when used in sentences can have a different function.

How can you tell what is the function of the same word in different sentences. For example look at the word “standing” in the following sentences:

  • He was a man of high social standing.
  • Standing water will create a problem for the community.
  • After the flood one house was left standing.

The word “standing” has a different function in these sentences. In the first, it is a noun. In the second, it is an adjective and in the third it is a verb.

As international travel and the use of the internet becomes more and more common, it becomes imperative to know the English language. This book will help you to understand the parts of speech and play a part towards mastering the English Language.

Successes

English Grammar tended to be my least favourite subject, always wishing the class period would be over. Then the teacher went back to basics. She made us use the The English Grammar Dictionary for Teachers, Parents and Students. I realised I have always been confused about the basic terms in English. I did not know the difference between alphabet and letter. I never knew how sound, symbol, letter, alphabet, word, language connect. English grammar terms nouns, verbs, etc., were just something to memorise and answer questions to get right answers. I always made English sentences by translating my Urdu sentence directly. Through the English Grammar Dictionary book I came to realise and know that Urdu and English have different sentence structures. I came to understand parts of speech and how to put these to use to speak and write English. My English is improving day by day through this book. No one tells us about these basic words in very easy way. This is a very helpful book. I recommend it to all students, especially to those who hate Grammar and to their teachers.

As a teacher I have read a lot of books on grammar but none can compete with this book - The English Grammar Dictionary by Fareeda Abbasi. Unlike other books this book makes grammar a tool for use in writing English and speaking English. I have previously found in different books many confusing definitions of grammar and the definition of different parts of speech were also a challenge to understand. The English Grammar Dictionary provides definition that are simply stated. The different parts of speech can be very easily understood by the pictures provided for the definitions, with plenty of examples listed. I use this book to help my students master structuring a sentence. If students have a big vocabulary but don’t know about the basics of grammar, then their knowledge cannot be put to use in speaking or in writing English. This book is unique that it speedily gives the student a strong workable foundation in English Grammar, so progress can be made towards Advanced English.
